God Help the Girl is the latest musical project from Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch. The music, a narrative song cycle, came to be as Murdoch began writing songs that he was unable to envision being recorded by Belle & Sebastian.

“I was out for a run and I got this tune in my head,” says Stuart of the album. “It occurred to me that it wasn’t a Belle & Sebastian song. I could hear female voices and strings, I could hear the whole thing, but I just couldn’t envisage myself singing it with the group.”

The tunes heavily feature “new” vocalist Catherine Ireton, whose gentle timbre lends itself well to Murdoch’s sweeping arrangements.
