Gainsbourg’s 1971 concept album, Histoire De Melody Nelson, tells the tale of an explicit love affair between an older French gentleman and a young English Lolita. Despite my inability to understand French, Gainsbourg unfurls his narrative through every skin crawling, not-so-subtle sexual coo, leaving no doubt of the subject matter. In fact, Gainsbourg and Humbert Humbert himself would most likely have viewed each other with equal parts knowing pity and self-righteous disgust.

After the album was originally released, Gainsbourg set the songs to film as a “musical” entitled Melody. View the beginning of the film below, where Gainsbourg first meets the object of his desire, Melody Nelson, after unintentionally striking her bicycle with his Rolls Royce (seriously).

Tuesday saw the first official domestic reissue of the album on CD and 180-gram vinyl. Highly recommended.
