For a young rock and roll band, few countries of origin imply a “sound” in the way that New Zealand does. I imagine this to be the musical equivalent of growing up the younger sibling of your high school’s valedictorian. Trying to live up to such high expectations must be a frustrating experience. Surf City takes this responsibility in stride, melding together the Dunedin sound of their predecessors with 80′s C86 jangle, 90′s slack-rock, and modern day indie rock.

Minisnap are essentially the legendary New Zealand band the Bats sans group leader Robert Scott. Though one of my favorite albums of 2008, Bounce Around, has not generated much hype around the interwebs. It seems that a group of middle aged kiwis lacking their principal songwriter would deserve a quiet reception, but guitarist Kaye Woodward leads the band through 12 fantastic pop songs. Lead-off track “Bounce Around” should clear those winter blues and have you shaking your hips around the living room thinking that getting older doesn’t seem so bad.
