Colour Me Impressed

Some people hate snow.  I hate those people.

Well, alright, I understand where they’re coming from.  Ours is not a species evolved to flourish naturally in cold environments.  In fact, our distant ancestors had to wear the dead carcasses of other species just to survive moderately cool climates.   I imagine as early humans migrated north, conversations might have gone something like this:

“Now hold on just one damn minute, Larry.  You’re telling me if I want to come with you, I’m supposed to climb up this bear’s ass and parade myself around – in front of other pissed off bears, no less! – and live inside a goddamn snowball?  Oh, what’s that?  It’s called an Igloo?  No, Larry, it’s a fucking snowball and I’m telling you right now you’ve lost your damn mind…”

And so forth.

But things have come a long way since then.  Sometimes we climb inside other stuff to stay warm.  Like 2-ton blocks of metal that we set on fire and hurtle at each other at 60 miles an hour!

Which brings me to my point.  Of all the things I’m looking forward to about the green revolution, there is one thing I will surely miss; one of my favorite times/places to listen to music is when I’m driving through a blizzard.  There is nothing more peaceful and positively beautiful than a fresh snowfall, especially when it is still coming down!

There is serenity in life.  There are moments of calm.  But nothing compares to the hush of a city blanketed in snow.  There is much to admire in the unhurried manner everyone assumes.  Sometimes it seems like everyone slows down to acknowledge their own insignificance in comparison to the beauty of nature.

And so when the rare opportunity presents itself; when I’m rolling slowly through bitter landscape in the comfort and privacy of a warm car, I pop in the songs I have gathered over the years for just such occasions and imagine that everyone else is listening to the same song.

Here are some of my favorites:

Secret Machines – The Leaves Are Gone

Radiohead – Kid A

Aloha – Ice Storming

Mogwai – Stop Coming To My House

The Magnetic Fields – Take Ecstasy With Me

Múm – We Have A Map Of The Piano

Microphones – I Felt Your Shape
